Słowiński National Park – Dunes
2023-06-22The Słowiński National Park is located 5 km west of Łeba. It was created in 1967 and in 1977 it was included by Unesco on the List of Biosphere Reserves of the World Network. It is one of 24 National Parks and one of two (along with Solina Park) located by the sea.
It protects an extremely interesting and flat part of the Baltic coast with unique plants and animals as well as diverse and unparalleled landscapes. There are approximately 250 species of birds in the park, including the white-tailed eagle, rare in Europe, and the black cormorant, black stork, lesser spotted eagle, eagle owl, and ruffed kingfisher.
The park's location on the European bird migration route and the presence of lakes, swamps, wetlands and uninhabited areas mean that so many bird species nest here, which is why the park was included in 1995 in the network of wetland habitats of international importance for birds, the so-called RAM-SAR reserves.
There are also numerous mammals living among the dune forest, including moose, fallow deer, badgers and other animals such as deer, roe deer, wild boars, ferrets and squirrels. Ichthyofauna includes about 40 species of freshwater fish, e.g. perch, pike, bream, roach, eel, and marine fish: flounder, whitefish, garfish, salmon, and sea trout.
